Who we are The Emergency Department represents the effective ‘front door’ of the hospital, seeing over 100,000 patients a year with injuries or illness. The department is open and staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with consultant presence on the ‘shop floor’ from 0800 until at least 11pm, every day. Our multi-disciplinary team consists of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, advanced care practitioners, assistant nurse practitioners, health care assistants, medical students, support workers and admin staff, all of whom play an important part in the patient journey. The department serves both adults and children, with a dedicated paediatric area and close links operationally and geographically with the paediatric assessment unit. There is a Consultant led Trauma Team that operates 24/7 and despite the development of regional major trauma centres, we still receive major trauma from within our catchment area. What We do The department aspires to delivering a high standard of care to all patients, providing excellent care in a timely fashion in a safe, clean and appropriate environment. We have led the way regionally and nationally in numerous aspects of care, not least with the development of a sedation service that offers patients with fractures, dislocations or wounds requiring repair, comfortable and time assured treatment of their conditions. Rapid assessment and triage (RAT) takes place in a dedicated area for all patients arriving by ambulance. This presents patients with the reassurance of an interaction with a senior clinician within 15 minutes of arrival, allows an interactive handover with paramedics and ambulance technicians and with ‘RAT’ initiated investigations and treatments, helps to smooth the patient pathway. Nurse practitioners operate independently alongside doctors managing the minors stream of patients. The department has a flourishing and forward thinking academic unit with a growing national profile. The unit boasts a portfolio of national, international and commercial NIHR supported research which has resulted in a number of local and regional awards. We pride ourselves on a patient centred approach with ‘care’ at the core of our business. Getting the correct diagnosis and initiating appropriate treatment is no longer on its own sufficient with the recognition that the manner in which these are delivered being equally important. The Emergency Department epitomises a ‘team’ approach. Staff are respected and their contribution valued, making the environment enjoyable and rewarding.
