Comfort Exeter is a project set up by staff from our Emergency Department to help support vulnerable patients.
The project aims to improve the care received by patients while in our department and also when they leave hospital.
Our clothing bank supplies key items of clothing for patients whose own clothes may have had to be removed or cut away while receiving treatment, or are no longer usable for a variety of reasons. Not all patients have family or friends to assist them while they are in the Emergency Department. A difficult and often distressing time can be made much easier for a patient if we can help them replace their clothes.
Our comfort bags have been put together help patients who have slightly greater needs and may have little or no support elsewhere. A small bag of essential items can help provide them with comfort and dignity. Items in the bag include: thermal socks, wet wipes, tissues, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap and female sanitary products if appropriate.
As part of our social prescribing initiative we also work with the following partners to signpost patients and their families to relevant local charities and services for support:

St Petrocks
St Petrocks is an Exeter based Charity for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed. For 25 years they have been providing a range of support, housing and prevention services.
Exeter Food Bank
No one in our community should have to face going hungry. Exeter foodbank supplies three days' nutritionally balanced food to anyone referred to them in Crisis. Started in 2008 this is a project founded by local churches and community groups, working towards stopping hunger in our local area.
Julien House
As part of Julian House, Bay 6 is a project based in the Royal Devon and Exeter (RD&E) Hospital offering housing and benefits advice for patients who find themselves at risk of homelessness on discharge from hospital.
Age UK Exeter
A local charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers.
YMCA Exeter
As a local YMCA and member of the national and international YMCA movement, YMCA Exeter creates supportive, inclusive and energising communities where all young people can truly belong, contribute and thrive.
Talkworks is a free, confidential, NHS talking therapy service, part of IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) for people aged 18+ in Devon. Access is via a self referral, referral from friends and family or from healthcare professionals.
